Project Description

The National Rehabilitation Hospital provides a comprehensive range of specialist rehabilitation services to patients throughout Ireland who, as a result of an accident, illness or injury, have acquired a physical or cognitive disability and who require specialist medical rehabilitation.

One project included the upgrade to the existing St. Patrick's and Our Lady’s wards, including an extension to accommodate additional bed space. There was also provision for a full Environmental Room Control system, which allows an incapacitated patient to operate all services within the room through either hand movement or puff/blow actions.

Another project included the Phase 1 Expansion of the National Rehabilitation Hospital and significant upgrades to site infrastructure, located on the grounds of the NRH campus. The new 18,000m2, 120-bed building over 4 floors is phase 1 of the planned expansion of the campus. The project also includes a swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, gym, fitness suite and multi-functional sports hall.

In parallel to the new 18,000m2 Phase 1 Project, an upgrade to the mains water treatment plant on the campus was designed, including rationalisation of the existing mains and cold water storage on the campus.

Ethos Input

The NRH project will be a fully serviced hospital designed and built to the latest standards and good practice. The mechanical and electrical services will include ventilation, heating, cooling, water services, drainage, medical gases, power, lighting, nurse call, security, fire protection, and telecommunications. This is a BIM project, and as such, all the services are being designed and coordinated in REVIT.

Ethos are providing mechanical and electrical engineering services to the project. In addition, Ethos are providing Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP), Contract Administration, Lead Consultant and Quantity Surveyor services to provide a single point of contact for the client.

Unique / Key Features

This is an A3 energy-rated building, and will make use of all the latest technologies for efficient design, heat recovery and energy reduction. The current design includes a combined heat and power plant to make the best use of the constant heat demand required for the pools.

Copper-Silver water treatment is a proven strategy to minimise legionella within mains water systems. This project is an upgrade of an existing system. The scope of the project will also reduce and centralise water storage on the campus to further mitigate against the risk of legionella.
